Meeting on 25 October 2011 – Recollections Of Two Old Men

12 October 2011

Flash back a hundred years ago to South Scotch Plains in the early 1900’s.  Imagine how it was to live there…Then come to our monthly meeting and find out how it really was.

Long time Scotch Plains resident Elmer “Pete” Terry will have pictures, memories and maps of this area of Scotch Plains. In his talk, he will share recollections of his and his father’s.

His father’s were recorded in 1975 when he was 87 years old. Arriving in 1757, the Terry family was one of the first families to settle in Scotch Plains.  “The Old Homestead” that the original Terry family built still stands, has never been sold and has always housed a Terry.  Pete and his wife Judy live there now.  Pete was born and lived the first 10 years of his life in neighboring Plainfield.  Then his parents moved to “The Old Homestead.”  He graduated from Scotch Plains and went into the plumbing and pipefitting trade with his father.  In 1970 he went into business for himself with his Mechanical Contracting Company.  He was a contractor and commercial & industrial builder.  He furthered his expertise with an Industrial Studies degree from Kean College.  For many years he was the Vice President of Construction and Project Manager for Chem-Fleur Company, a fragrance and flavor chemical company.  A larger company bought it out and Pete worked for them in his same position until his retirement 7 years ago.

The meeting is open and free to everyone.

It is held at the Scotch Hills Country Club on Plainfield Avenue and Jerusalem Road in Scotch Plains,  on Tuesday, October 25th at 8:00PM.

Bed bugs are back!

31 March 2011

These small parasitic insects were largely eradicated as pest in the developed world in the 1940’s.  But since 1995 they have started to infest us again.  “Bed Bug Queen” Marcia Anderson will give us a presentation on the history, identification, treatment and prevention of these cimicidae at the monthly meeting of The Historical Society of Scotch Plains and Fanwood on Tuesday evening, April 26th.

Her presentation will show the oldest documented evidence of bed bugs coming from Ancient Egypt as early as 1352 BCE. Bed bugs traveled through Europe during the Middle Ages and hitched a ride to the Americas. Marcia will discuss the role of DDT, and after DDT…the sequel:  the return of bed bugs.

Marcia, a Scotch Plains resident, is the region 2 representative for the US EPA.  Additionally Marcia specializes in mosquito management for Haiti and pest management and pesticide use for Staten Island.  Besides working for the EPA, Marcia is an adjunct professor at Kean University in the Department of Geology and Meteorology.  Previously she taught at Montclair State University and William Patterson University.  Presently this busy lady is a PhD candidate in Environmental Management at Montclair State University, doing 2 research case studies.

This meeting is open and free to everyone.  It takes place on Tuesday evening April 26th starting at 8:00PM. It is held at the Scotch Hills Country Club on Plainfield Avenue and Jerusalem Road in Scotch Plains.   Come and get a brief lesson on the history of the bed bug that will leave your brain crawling.

Meeting on October 26, 2010

8 October 2010

Press release:  1919, Scotch Plains, NJ:
Auction of The vast Real Estate holdings of wealthy Warren Ackerman.  Warren Ackerman amassed a vast amount of real estate holdings in the Scotch Plains area.  For example, he owned at least 17 farms.  Consequently he became one of the wealthiest local men in the Scotch Plains. He died in 1896 and in 1919 his heirs auctioned off his 620 acres of property holdings.  To put this is perspective; this equals approximately three-fourths of present day Fanwood.

Fanwood’s own Director of TV Station 35, George Weiss, has carefully researched this fascinating auction, creating a historical video of this event.  He will show this at the October monthly meeting of The Historical Society of Scotch Plains and Fanwood.  If time permits, George will show the trailer of this documentary which features Betty Lindner’s historic home in Scotch Plains.

The meeting is at 8 pm on Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at the Scotch Hills Country Club in Scotch Plains, NJ.

Anyone interested in this impressive documentary is encouraged to attend.  It is free and light refreshments and fellowship follow the meeting.  Please contact Richard Bousquet, President, for further information at 908-232-1199.
